An original mini-game created to commemorate Google Play Japan's exhibit at the 2024 Tokyo Game Show.
The Tokyo Game Show (TGS) is one of the world’s biggest gaming events, where game companies from around the globe come together to showcase upcoming titles and experiences. For the 2024 show, Google Play Japan teamed up with PHQ to launch their first-ever online activation, bringing the TGS excitement to players everywhere.
PHQ had the exciting task of transforming the Tokyo Game Show experience into an online adventure! Teaming up with Google Play Japan and creative masterminds at Kayac and Hakuhodo, we crafted an immersive info hub for the in-person event and created Diamond Castle, a thrilling speed runner and vertical climber game that you can dive into right from your mobile browser.
And here’s the best part: even if you couldn’t make it to the event in person, you didn’t miss out! The online version brought all the action to you, with a chance to score cool prizes. By climbing the leaderboard, joining early, or sharing the fun on X, players unlocked rewards tied to seven of the industry’s top game developers. While the physical event was a jam-packed three days, the online experience stretched out to four whole weeks with more time, more gameplay, and way more chances to win!
We worked hand in hand with Japanese game designers to bring their vision of the physical gaming event to life in a digital space.
In the initial stages of the project, clear wireframes and user flows were essential to ensure alignment on the overall experience.
For pixel-perfect implementation, we fine-tuned asset development to ensure every character and their unique objects worked seamlessly within the playable space and collision zones.
At the start of the project, we explored possible art directions and brainstormed ways to balance the clean, bold Google Play branding with the lively, retro-inspired style of the newly established Diamond Castle. It was all about finding that sweet spot between modern simplicity and nostalgic flair!
