Words are playfully interpreted with emoji in a digital installation for the Semi Permanent design conference.
Semi Permanent is the pre-eminent design conference held in Auckland. For its 2019 summit, we were asked to create a visual display that could be used during presentations and in gaps in the schedule. Collaborating with Alt Group, we created Emoji Type, a word-recognising font, that populates the type-forms with relevant emoji.
From on stage, presenters were able to type messages in live and the resulting animations would be seen immediately on-screen. It was a great way to introduce a little fun into the presenter-audience dynamic and was greatly enjoyed by many of the speakers.
Between presentations, the text broadcast fun messages about the schedule in a way that attracted attention and caught people’s imagination.
Using a vast library of emoji with predictive text, this font visually interpreted words as you typed.
A collaboration with Alt Group, the type installation was used as a feature of the 2019 Semi Permanent design conference in Auckland.
