A touch-screen experience equipping our tamariki with the knowledge of getting ready in the event of a volcano eruption in Tāmaki Makaurau.
The Auckland Museum sought a solution for its Volcanoes gallery to teach families, especially tamariki, how to prepare for and protect themselves during a volcanic event in Tāmaki Makaurau. The goal was to make the experience educational and enjoyable, targeting children aged 7 to 12 while ensuring the content was fun and easy to understand.
By combining gamification with practical knowledge, PHQ transformed a potentially overwhelming topic into an engaging and approachable experience. Children are drawn to the vibrant, interactive interface, where they learn about Volcanoes with each mini-game. This project empowers tamariki to take an active role in understanding volcanic preparedness, ensuring the lessons resonate long after their visit. It also supports Auckland Museum’s mission to educate and engage diverse audiences in a meaningful way.
To captivate young minds while conveying critical information, PHQ designed and developed four mini-games tailored for interactive touch screens. Each game focuses on a key aspect of volcanic emergency preparedness, embedding educational elements within a playful format.
Storytelling through gamification: PHQ storyboarded the UX journey, narrative, and gameplay.
We began by exploring Rive to bring the characters to life and created a prototype to test whether the technology would be suitable for the project.
Creating the right UI design system to complement the game design, we fine-tuned the flow and experience.
Our PHQ team's detailed character animation and expansion of the cast created an immersive world central to the gameplay.
Using animation, we realistically created an ash effect by carefully analysing real-life examples.
